Real Yields and Gold: The Framework

The most durable macro correlation in the metals complex — how it works, when it dominates, and when it breaks.

M. Halden · Macro Editor 8 min read

The inverse relationship between gold and real 10-year yields is the closest thing to a physical law in the precious metals complex. But its sensitivity varies across regimes. This framework note lays out how we use it.

Gold is a non-yielding asset. When inflation-adjusted yields on Treasuries rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold rises with them. Historically, a 100bp move in 10-year TIPS has driven a 12–18% inverse move in gold.

Regime dependence

Since 2022, central-bank buying has meaningfully dampened downside sensitivity. Gold now falls less than the historical beta would predict when real yields rise sharply.

Practical use

  • Real yields set the trend
  • Central-bank flows set the floor
  • Dollar direction sets the volatility
  • Positioning sets the extremes

Aligning three of the four is enough to take a directional view.
