How to read the real-yield / gold relationship in 2026
The classic inverse correlation is intact, but the sensitivity has shifted. Here is how we frame it.
The relationship between gold and real yields is the single most durable macro correlation in the precious metals complex. But its strength varies across regimes, and understanding when it dominates — and when it does not — is essential for framing the market.
The mechanical link
Gold pays no coupon. When real (inflation-adjusted) yields on Treasuries rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold rises with them. Historically, a 100bp move in 10-year TIPS yields has translated into roughly a 12–18% move in gold, inversely.
Why the sensitivity has fallen
Since 2022, central bank buying has introduced a large, price-insensitive marginal buyer. This has raised the floor and dampened the downside sensitivity to rising real yields.
The framework we use
- Real yields set the trend
- Central bank demand sets the floor
- Dollar direction sets the tactical volatility
- Positioning sets the short-term extremes
Getting all four aligned is rare. Getting three aligned is enough for a directional view.
