Safe-haven is one of the most abused terms in finance. A true safe haven should hold or gain value precisely when the rest of the portfolio suffers.
The short list
- Gold — the historical anchor
- US Treasuries — sometimes, when the crisis is not about the US itself
- Cash in a hard currency — always useful, always losing to inflation
- The Swiss franc and Japanese yen — traditional FX havens
Why gold sits at the top
It is the only safe haven with no counterparty, no default risk, and no dependence on any government's balance sheet.
